Simple Tips to Keep Every Pair of Sandals looking Great!

Whether you’ve just picked up your first pair of handcrafted sandals or you’re building a collection, proper care can keep them comfortable and looking fresh for years. Each material needs something a little different. Here's what you need to know:

1. Leather Sandals

What to know:
Leather is durable but needs moisture and protection to prevent cracking or drying out.

Care tips:

  • Clean regularly with a soft, damp cloth. Use mild soap if needed.

  • Condition monthly with a leather conditioner to keep them supple, if you have the time/money to invest.

  • Avoid soaking in water—if they get wet, let them air dry naturally (never use heat).

  • Store away from sunlight to prevent fading and stiffness. Linen bags are perfect for this.

2. Suede Sandals

What to know:
Suede is soft and stylish, but it's sensitive to water and stains.

Care tips:

  • Use a suede brush to remove dust and lift the nap (the fuzzy texture).

  • Blot stains with a clean cloth—don’t rub. For oil or tougher marks, a suede eraser works well.

  • Apply a suede protector spray to guard against moisture and dirt.

  • Keep them dry—avoid wearing suede in rain or on wet surfaces.

3. Nubuck Sandals

What to know:
Nubuck is similar to suede but slightly tougher. It still needs gentle care.

Care tips:

  • Brush gently with a nubuck or suede brush after each wear.

  • Use a nubuck cleaner for stains—never regular soap or water.

  • Protect with a spray made for suede/nubuck to repel water and dust.

  • Air dry only—never direct heat.

4. Knit or Fabric Sandals

What to know:
Knit and woven fabric sandals are breathable and casual, but they stain easily.

Care tips:

  • Spot clean with mild soap and water. Use a soft brush or cloth to lift dirt.

  • Avoid soaking the entire shoe. Too much water can weaken the fabric and glue.

  • Let them dry completely in a shaded, well-ventilated area.

  • Spray with a fabric protector if you’re wearing them often outside.

5. Slides

What to know:
Slides are designed for easy wear, often made from rubber, EVA foam, or a mix of materials.

Care tips:

  • Wipe down with a damp cloth after each wear, especially if worn to the beach or pool.

  • Use mild soap and water for deeper cleaning—just avoid soaking them if they have cork or fabric parts.

  • Dry thoroughly before storing to prevent odor or bacteria buildup.

6. Ponyskin (Haircalf)

What to know:
Ponyskin (also called haircalf) is real leather with the hair left on—delicate and stylish, but sensitive.

Care tips:

  • Avoid water completely. Moisture can cause the hair to lift or curl.

  • Use a soft, dry brush (like a clean toothbrush) to remove dust and gently lift flattened hair.

  • Blot stains immediately with a dry cloth—never rub or scrub.

  • Store them away from sunlight and in a dust bag to protect the texture.

7. Cork Footbeds (Plakton, Inter-bios)

What to know:
Cork footbeds mold to your feet over time—but they also absorb moisture and can dry out or crack.

Care tips:

  • Wipe the footbed regularly with a damp cloth. Use a mild vinegar-water mix (1:1) to deodorize if needed.

  • Avoid submerging them in water or wearing in the rain.

  • Condition the cork every few months with a cork sealant to keep it from drying or crumbling.

  • Let them air out after each wear—don’t keep them in plastic or closed spaces while damp.

8. Synthetic Leather (PU, Vegan Leather, etc.)

What to know:
Synthetic leather is easy to maintain but can crack or peel over time without care.

Care tips:

  • Wipe clean with a damp cloth and mild soap—avoid harsh cleaners.

  • Apply a synthetic leather conditioner occasionally to keep the surface flexible (look for one labeled safe for PU or faux leather).

  • Don’t leave in hot places (like a car or direct sun), as heat can warp or peel the finish.

  • Store them upright or with shoe shapers to prevent creasing.

General Tips for All Sandals

  • Rotate pairs to avoid wearing the same ones daily—they need time to breathe.

  • Avoid leaving them in hot cars or under direct sun for long periods.

  • Store in a cool, dry place. Use a shoe bag or box to keep them dust-free.

  • Use a shoe tree or stuff them with paper if they lose shape.

  • Always test products or cleaners on a small area first.

  • When in doubt, less is more—gentle cleaning is better than aggressive scrubbing.

  • Giving your sandals a day to rest between wears keeps them in better shape long-term.

In Short:

Caring for handcrafted sandals isn’t complicated—it’s just about regular attention and a few simple habits. Clean gently, protect the material, and don’t let them sit damp or dirty.

A little effort goes a long way.
